Exams
With the latest cutting-edge technology screening for colorectal cancer and other abnormalities has never been easier and more comfortable for our patients. LSG Imaging is proud to offer colonoscopy exams in Santa Monica and Beverly Hills through our advanced virtual colonoscopy procedure.
Virtual Colonoscopy (VC), also known as Computed Tomographic Colonoscopy (CTC), is a non-invasive procedure when compared to traditional colonoscopy screenings. No anesthesia is required, the examination lasts 10-15 minutes, and afterwards, a patient can return to their daily routine in as little as 30 minutes. The results will generally be provided immediately after the examination.
Recent recommendations suggest starting colon screening at the age of 45 rather than 50.

How it Works
It is for the reasons mentioned above that our practice continues to be respected by patients and referring physicians alike.
What are the Benefits of VC Compared to a Traditional Colonoscopy?
But there are also other proven benefits, like:
Taking Anti-Coagulants (Blood Thinners) is OK
If you’re taking a blood thinner, there’s no need to discontinue their use before the procedure, as opposed to traditional colonoscopies.
No Risk of Infection
Traditional colonoscopy uses the colonoscope repeatedly with sterilization between exams. VC uses a disposable tube one time only.
Bowel perforation is extremely rare, compared to conventional colonoscopy.
Due to the use of the flexible, rubber tubing in the VC procedure, combined with our use of CO2 gas, we haven’t had a single case of bowel perforation in our patients. However, with conventional colonoscopy, there is a 1/500 to 1/1,000 chance of bowel perforation. This can lead to costly and unnecessary surgery, pain and discomfort; in fact, there over one thousand patient deaths each year in the United States due to complications from traditional colonoscopy.
Increased Visibility
In addition to visualization of the entire colon, which is not always possible with conventional colonoscopy, VC also allows the radiologist to evaluate other structures in the lower chest, abdomen, and pelvis. Polyp Removal
Only a small minority of VC patients (6%) will require a subsequent therapeutic traditional colonoscopy (OC) to remove a polyp. If the patient so wishes, they can be sent for polyp removal on the same day following the VC examination*.
*Same day polyp removal is not applicable while COVID restrictions are in place..

- Incomplete or failed colonoscopy.
- Patients on blood thinners do not have to discontinue their medication prior to this exam.

Some patients may not be able to undergo VC, including:
- Those with inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease.

- Acute diverticulitis (must wait 6-8 weeks).

Virtual Colonoscopy Frequently Asked Questions
At LSG Imaging, we offer a virtual colonoscopy at our Beverly Hills and Santa Monica locations. If you are considering this screening method or have questions about the process, the answers below can help you understand what to expect.
What is a virtual colonoscopy?
A virtual colonoscopy, sometimes called CT colonography, is an imaging-based screening exam that evaluates the colon for polyps or signs of colorectal cancer. Instead of using a traditional colonoscope, the exam relies on computed tomography to capture high-resolution images and special software that allow radiologists to examine the colon in detail.
Since the exam does not require sedation or the insertion of a scope through the full length of the colon, many patients find it to be a more comfortable alternative to conventional colonoscopy. Our board-certified radiologists review the scanned images and assess the colon for findings that may warrant additional evaluation or follow-up testing.
Can I eat before a virtual colonoscopy?
Virtual colonoscopy requires some preparation to ensure clear imaging and a clean colon. Our care team will ask you to follow a modified diet the day before the exam, and instruct you to take a bowel preparation protocol. You will need to avoid solid foods the day before the procedure. We’ll provide specific preparation guidelines in advance, so you know exactly what to expect.
Is a virtual colonoscopy painful?
Most patients tolerate virtual colonoscopy well and do not find it painful. During the exam, the technologist introduces a small amount of carbon dioxide into the colon, which may cause temporary pressure, cramping or mild discomfort. This sensation is brief and resolves quickly once the exam concludes because carbon dioxide is very quickly absorbed and dissipates. The procedure does not require any anesthesia or sedation.
How long does a virtual colonoscopy take?
The imaging portion of a virtual colonoscopy typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Including check-in and preparation, most patients complete their appointment within a short visit and can return to their normal routine shortly after.
Can I drive myself home after a virtual colonoscopy?
Yes. Since there is no sedation involved, you can drive and resume regular activities immediately following the procedure.
How much does a virtual colonoscopy cost?
We are happy to go over costs with you before you schedule, so you will know what to expect upfront.
Is virtual colonoscopy covered by insurance?
LSG Imaging accepts Medicare for virtual colonoscopy exams. If you have a different insurance plan, payment is due at the time of service. After your visit, we will give you a detailed superbill that you can submit to your insurer if you would like to request reimbursement. Coverage varies by plan, so it is worth checking with your provider ahead of time.
