FAQ LSG Imaging

CT Scan Frequently Asked Questions

Physicians order computed tomography when needed to evaluate symptoms or confirm a diagnosis. If you have an upcoming appointment or are considering scheduling an exam, you may have questions about preparation, safety, timing, or insurance coverage.
The information below addresses the most common questions patients ask before their CT scan at LSG Imaging.

What is a CT scan?

A CT scan is an advanced imaging exam that provides detailed cross-sectional views of the body. Using rotating X-ray technology and computer processing, the cross-sectional scan produces highly precise images of bones, organs, blood vessels, and soft tissues.

CT imaging plays an important role in diagnosing injuries, identifying disease, guiding treatment decisions, and monitoring medical conditions over time. At LSG Imaging, we perform CT scans using modern imaging systems, and our board-certified radiologists interpret every scan to support accurate and timely results.

Is a CT scan the same as an MRI?

No. While both exams create cross-sectional images, they rely on different technologies. MRI uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency waves, making it a very useful modality.

Your referring physician selects the imaging study based on the specific clinical question being addressed.

Can I eat or drink before a CT scan?

Preparation depends on the type of CT scan ordered. Some abdominal or pelvic exams may require fasting for several hours beforehand; other scans may not require any dietary restrictions. You’ll receive specific instructions from our care team prior to your appointment, so you know exactly how to prepare.

Is a CT scan safe?

CT scanning is a well-established diagnostic tool commonly used in modern medicine. Imaging protocols are carefully designed to use the lowest dose necessary to achieve high-quality results. For most patients, the medical value of the scan significantly outweighs the potential risks. If you are pregnant or have concerns, speak with your referring physician before scheduling the exam.

Are CT scans safe for children?

When medically appropriate, CT scans can be safely performed in pediatric patients. Radiation doses are adjusted according to body size and clinical need. Physicians carefully evaluate the necessity of imaging before recommending a CT exam for a child.

How long does a CT scan take?

The scan itself is typically completed within a few minutes. Including check-in, positioning, and possible contrast administration, most appointments are finished within 15 to 30 minutes. Patients are usually able to resume normal activities immediately afterward.

How much does a CT scan cost?

Pricing varies based on the area of the body being examined and whether contrast is required. Our care team is available to review self-pay pricing in advance and answer any questions prior to scheduling.

Is a CT scan covered by insurance?

We accept Medicare. Patients with other insurance plans may proceed on a self-pay basis. We provide a detailed superbill after your exam, which you can submit to your insurance carrier for potential reimbursement according to your individual policy.
